FAQs

  • Saunas are safe spaces when used correctly & we welcome children from 12yrs in our PRIVATE sessions ONLY. Please note that in the Private session, children under 16yrs must be accompanied by an adult on 1:1 basis and supervised at all times. Children (12-17yrs) are NOT permitted in our SOCIAL sessions and Special Events (e.g. Rituals, Full Moon etc.)

All persons using the Sauna do so at their own risk. Risks include bodily injury and possibly death. If you have any reservations about using the sauna, such as medical conditions, underlying health problems (including low, high or irregular blood pressure, heart/cardiac issues), the use of prescription drugs and/or pregnancy, it is essential that you consult your doctor before making a booking or using the sauna. If in any doubt, you should not use the sauna.

There are many health benefits to using the sauna when used correctly. Arrive well hydrated, drink plenty of water during your session & take frequent breaks.

  • We have 2 Saunas on site which can accommodate a total of 14 people in one session. 1 sauna seats up to 8 people & the other seats up to 6 people. IMPORTANT NOTE: We do not allow an individual 50min session to be shared between 2 people.

If you are a group of more than 8 people, you can book both saunas privately in the same session time.

If you are a group larger then 14 people, please get in touch via email so that we can discuss options with you.

  • Our sessions are all 50 minutes in duration to give you the opportunity to gain the full health benefits of a sauna session.

To maximise your time, please arrive wearing your swimwear. We do not currently have changing facilities.

For someone using saunas on a weekly basis the recommendation is to spend 10-15 minutes in the sauna, then take a break to cool down, either with a quick dip in cold water or taking a seat and cooling off in the wild Atlantic breeze. Then repeat!

Important note: Those using saunas less often than weekly should consider spending less time in the sauna (i.e 5-10mins) in each round. It usually takes longer to cool down in air (depending on outside temperature & wind) than water, so please bear this in mind when taking breaks to ensure you take a long enough break before going back to the sauna.

  • In a Private session you book one of our saunas exclusively for your use. Please note: You will share the outside space (i.e plunge pool & seating area) unless you have booked both saunas privately.

In a Social session you will share the sauna with up to 5-6 other people. These sessions are designed to allow individuals to use the sauna affordably.

The best part of Sauna Socials is the community connection. A chance to enjoy the experience and a conversation with other like-minded people.

Important Note: Children (12-17yrs) are not permitted in our Social sessions & Special events. These are strictly 18yrs upwards.

  • Drink plenty of water 24hrs before, during & after your sauna session to avoid dehydration. Please bring a water bottle with you as we do not provide cups.

Move slowly. We recommend to rest quietly for at least 10 mins after finishing your session to allow your body time to rebalance.

Avoid applying creams/make-up/fake tan prior to your sauna session to allow your skin to breathe. We kindly ask that you do not use our plunge pool if you have applied cream/sun cream or fake tan prior to your session.

Remove jewellery & watches & avoid swimwear with metal parts - metal heats up fast & may burn your skin.

Arrive 10 minutes before your session so we can brief you before your session starts & avoid losing precious sauna time.

Arrive wearing your swimwear. We do not currently have changing facilities so advise to bring a dry robe or dressing gown with you for ease of changing after your session.

  • 2 Towels - one to sit on inside the sauna & one to dry off

Swimwear - as we are in a public area, swimwear must be worn.

Beach Footwear -to protect your feet from gravel, otherwise enjoy the free reflexology!

Water bottle & drinking water - to prevent dehydration, during and after your sauna session.

Warm/waterproof clothing (e.g. dry robe or towel dressing gown) - for ease of changing after your session & so you can sit comfortably for a post sauna chill out.

  • Please arrive 10 minutes before your session start time to allow plenty of time for briefing. Arriving late will shorten the duration of your session.

We do not currently have changing facilities and therefore recommend arriving already wearing your swimwear. If you are planning to take a sea dip before your session starts please come & speak to us beforehand so we can brief you before your swim & ensure the sauna will be ready for you once you finish your dip.

  • We are located on New Pier beach in Spiddal Here

It is approximately 20 minutes drive from Galway city but traffic can be variable depending which part of the city you are coming from so we recommend allowing at least 30 minutes to reach us.

There is plenty of parking space for cars & bikes on the road right next to the sauna site. Parking is NOT permitted on site. However, please note on good weather days and especially in summer, the Pier can get busy so please allow extra time in case you need to park further away in the village centre which is approx. 12 minute walk from the sauna.

  • We have limited storage so advise to bring minimal personal belongings with you. Belongings are stored at your own risk and we cannot accept responsibility for lost or damaged items.

If you leave something behind, please get in touch with us via email or instagram as soon as you realise. We hold on to items for a limited time but then donate unclaimed items to charity.

  • At Driftwood Sauna our ethos is to step away from convention & embrace the wild! Our site is off grid & you should expect a fully outdoor immersive experience.

We do not have conventional showers but provide you with plenty of fresh water to rinse your body during & after your sauna session using simple traditional ways.

  • We do not have a toilet on site.

There are public toilets available in the village (opposite Runda Coffee shop) and in the Centra petrol station. We recommend to use these before coming for your session as there are a 12min walk away. In the Summer months (June-Aug) there are Portaloos on the beach next to the sauna.
